If you know me personally, you know that I covet the photos I take. I take such pride in them, it takes me about a year to get them to you. My family does not rely on seeing my photos for months, if ever. I want to retouch them even if it is just sharpening (I know, I can’t tell the difference either!). It is one of the things I am OCD about.
Well a few days ago, I dropped my external hard drive…while it was plugged in – my 300GB hard drive that has been with me for 8+ years. It had literally documented my college years and then some. I only cared about my daughter’s pictures. I lost about 6 months of pictures to which my father-in-law reassured me, “I’m sure you will make up for that fast.”
During that depressing day, I asked myself why do I take so many pictures or why do others take as much as me? I’m sure I am not alone especially with the age of digital cameras. These are my reasons:
- I don’t want to regret not taking it
- I want to immortalize this moment
Yet, when I do miss that photo-op, I only regret it for a few moments and I instead focus more on the moment. I end up immortalizing it in my head and often, it is a memory I will look back on to make me smile. But..
- I want my children to be able to relive the moment
I think that is the biggest clincher for me. I don’t remember much of my childhood since I don’t have much photos to look back on and my parents don’t tell me much about it. I hope that I can provide Syd with history because my long-term memory will definitely not cut it.
I back up my hard drives but I had gotten lazy. Luckily I was able to do a data recovery on my SD cards and retrieve some photos I lost. But I will need a long-term solution to storage and my methodology.
Why do you take photos? If you take a lot of photos like me, 100+ for one event, I’d love to hear how you store your photos. Do you have a routine for reviewing/weeding out photos?

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
Spot on with this write-up, I really think this site needs far more attention.
I’ll probably be back again to read more, thanks for the advice!
